The students were, "Navigating like it's 1492" -- they used the same basic instruments and techniques Columbus would have used as they navigated across the 'ocean' of the courtyard to the resources of the New World.
Blindfolded 'Explorers' were guided by Navigators and Ship's Pilots across the courtyard. The pilots used a magnetic compass and a pre-calculated time/distance chart to direct the route, and to help the Log keeper write down the information to keep track of the Explorer's route. At each stop, the Navigator used a quadrant to measure the angle to the top of two reference points, which were the lamp posts in the courtyard. Each group also had a Ship's Captain who was responsible to keep the group organized (and the Explorer safe while they were moving).
The students were able to better understand the challenges faced by the early explorers as they headed into unknown territory, and the difficulties of following a route which someone else had recorded.
Students in Mrs. Shimer’s and Mr. Lipsitz’s classes kicked off their Propaganda LDC Unit on Tuesday, September 1st with a visit from 6 local elected officials who shared campaign strategies with the students. Local officials included Superintendent Charlie Van Zant; County Commissioner Gavin Rollins; Chairman of the Clay County Republican Party, Leslie Dougher; School Board Member, Ashley Gilhousen; County Commissioner, Wayne Bolla; and Clerk of Courts, Tara Green.
We appreciate each of these officials spending time with our students and helping them learn first-hand knowledge of campaign strategies.
